AGENT & publisher QUERIES

Finding a traditional publisher can be a long and challenging journey. To be sure, only a tiny fraction of books are now published by a big publishing house. But here’s the good news: Even if you don’t end up with an agent or publisher, the process described below is extremely helpful in thinking through your book, planning your marketing, identifying your target audience and fleshing out your outline.

Through a back-and-forth collaborative process, we can help compile first an agent query and then a book proposal for a publisher’s consideration.

An agent query consists of a well-written synopsis of the book, the target audience, the author’s standing (previous publications, social platform, professional credentials, etc.), a listing of competitive books and their success, the target audience, an explanation of why this book is of interest now and how it will stand out in the market. Also, include a well-known authority or writer who is willing to endorse the book or write an introduction.

To apply for an agent query,

we'll need to see a finished manuscript. An editor will then

contact you regarding

your needs and goals.

$50 AN HOUR TO $300

A book proposal is a very extensive undertaking, because it packages the most comprehensive elements of a book for a publisher. It includes the steps outlined above in the Agent Query plus an expanded table of contents, a detailed marketing analysis, competitive title suggestions and one to three sample chapters.

jacket copy

The jacket copy is arguably the single most important element of your book—and it better rock. It’s almost a given that a book buyers first peruse the back cover, the blurbs, the inside jacket, and the author’s bio to quickly glean the book’s scope, the author’s standing, and the writing style. Only when the jacket copy passes muster, do these would-be buyers crack the book open to a random page to make their final decision.

For $300, Mission Point will collaborate on, edit, and/or write the author’s biography and jacket copy, consult on author blurbs, and provide the ISBN number and the BISAC (book Industry Subject and Category)—the latter two are required for bookstore sales and most databases. It’s a worthy investment.

cover design

The number-one reason that someone buys a book is because a friend or family member recommended it.

The number-two reason that someone buys a book is because of the cover. Cover design is the face your book shows to the reading world. Good design compels a reader to pick up the book and turn it over to look at the blurbs. Good design is good advertising.

Cover design should look amazing on a book shelf as well as in an Internet store.

print-On-demand books

Print-On-Demand (POD) is the best choice for most authors. It's cheap, fast, easy to correct, and you can order as many copies as you like — from one to one thousand.

authors who order an interior design automatically receive a PDF that can be uploaded to  the printer of your choice. Authors also receive an epub file for ebook publishing.

Amazon's Createspace is the vanguard of POD, and its paperbacks are well-made and good-looking, with a choice of a glossy or a matte cover.

Createspace also has economical pricing on its full-color POD books.

IngramSpark is another option for POD.

Three paper stocks are available for color printing and two options for hardcover books, one with a cloth cover and dust jacket.

Quality full-color POD on glossy paper is available through Lulu.

E-book distributors like Amazon and Barnes & Noble use various file types. Our ePub files will work anywhere.

Authors who order an interior design automatically receive an ePub file for uploading to the distributor of their choice.

Books with illustrations / images are subject to additional costs.

off-set printing

This is traditional printing on a press, and it typically requires higher quantities of books but results in the highest-quality product. Authors will find the most options in terms of cover and paper stocks, binding methods and color availability. Unlike Print-on-Demand books, off-set printing usually requires some inventory risk.
